Dog Fest is an incredibly exciting experience, whether it's your first time or your tenth! There's so much to do, see, learn, and discover. As we gear up for our fourth year attending all the shows, we've compiled a list of our top tips for making the most of your dog show visit. Whether you're a seasoned dog owner or a first-time visitor, dog shows offer something for everyone, from admiring beautiful breeds to learning about dog care.
Tip 1: Research & Plan Your Day
Before attending the dog show, research the event details, including the schedule, location, and participating breeds. There is so much to see and do so take note of everything you want to attend and take note of where your favourite stands are. Familiarise yourself with the layout of the venue and any specific rules or regulations. This will help you plan your day and ensure you don't miss any highlights. There is always a vet and human first aid on site should anyone need care, so take note on where these are located before you come on site.
Tip 2: Arrive Early
Dog shows can get very busy, so arriving early will give you the best chance to get good parking spot and have plenty of time to find your way around the site. Vendors typically travel to shows too so will have limited stock, some even have exclusive goodie bags and offers for the first few customers, so arriving early gives you the best shopping experience too.
Tip 3: Dress Comfortably & For All Seasons!
Most shows are in large rural fields so you will be on your feet for most of the day on soft ground. Comfortable shoes are a absolute must but always have some wellies in your car in case of rain as British weather is very unpredictable at times!
Most shows everyone dresses very causal in their usual dog walking gear. Backpacks and bumbags are great to keep your essentials in so your hands are free for your dogs safety, shopping and activities.
Make sure your dog has options too. Always make sure they are in a safe harness and always bring a fleece or raincoat for them too. Most shows have a ban on retractable leads and require you to have a safe fixed lead. Please read our guides on safe dog leads below and check out the Wyld Cub range of 5ft Dog Leads.

Tip 4: Bring Essentials
Pack a bag with essentials for both you and your dog, such as water, snacks, bowls and phone portable charger because you'll want to capture lots of moments and memories. If you're bringing your dog, ensure you have a leash, waste bags, and any necessary supplies for their comfort.
Tip 5: Respect the Dogs & Owners
Remember that the dogs and their owners are there to enjoy the show and with busy environments be respectful and always ask permission before approaching another dog. Dogs can become very overwhelmed and act out of character at dog shows, so keep an eye on your dogs behaviour and take them for some chill time if they need it. Good trade stands will let you sit at the back of their tent for some quiet time if you need. Remember there is always a vet on site if your dog is feeling unwell.
Tip 6: Learn from the Experts
Dog shows are a great opportunity to learn from experienced industry experts. Attend demonstrations, workshops, and Q&A sessions to gain valuable insights into dog care, training, and showing.
Tip 7: Network with Other Dog Lovers
Dog shows are a fantastic place to meet fellow dog enthusiasts. Join breed-specific clubs, and exchange contact information with like-minded pet parents. Building a network within the dog community can be beneficial for advice, support, and sharing experiences. Tip 8: Go Shopping!
Discover and fall in love with new brands. Vendors at dog shows often showcase the latest in dog food, accessories, grooming products, and more. You can find unique items not on the high street or in your local pet shop. Make sure to visit all the vendors, even if their offerings aren't exactly what you're looking for. Sharing their stalls on your social media would be greatly appreciated. Many vendors also provide free photo opportunities that you can share on your socials.
Tip 9: Participate in Activities
Many dog shows offer activities and competitions for attendees, such as agility courses, obedience trials, and costume contests. Participate in these events to have fun with your dog and possibly win some prizes. Getting involved in the activities is a great way to create memories with your dog.
Tip 10: Showcase your experience
Many people who can't attend shows love to watch online. Take plenty of photos and share them on your socials. Small businesses at shows often have the most wonderful and unique products but may lack the marketing budgets to reach a wider audience. By showcasing your shopping hauls and photo opportunities on your socials, you can help these small businesses get discovered and grow
In summary
Attending a dog show can be a memorable and enriching experience for dog lovers of all ages. By following these tips, you'll be well-prepared to make the most of your visit and enjoy everything the event has to offer.
